NAG 1: CURRICULUM
TRENTHAM SCHOOL POLICY
ON
CURRICULUM/LEARNING
Next Review Date – Aug 2025
Trentham School will foster student achievement by providing a balanced curriculum in accordance with the New Zealand and Trentham School Curricula.
To provide a foundation, in students’ first six/seven school years, for future learning and achievement.
To develop the knowledge, dispositions, confidence and independence needed by all students to compete successfully in a modern and ever-changing environment. This includes helping them to take increasing responsibility for their own learning.
To provide equal opportunities for all students through programmes that take into account their learning needs and interests
To provide quality teaching approaches and assessment strategies that enable all students to achieve to their potential.
Trentham School will: -
Implement balanced and appropriate teaching and learning programmes which are consistent with the New Zealand Curriculum and reflect the Trentham School Charter and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Teaching approaches that consistently have a positive impact on student learning, as detailed in research, will be promoted. Evidence tells us that students learn best when teachers:
create a supportive learning environment
encourage reflective thought and action
enhance the relevance of new learning
facilitate shared learning
made connections to prior learning and experiences
provide sufficient opportunities to learn
inquire into the teaching/learning relationship
provide a problem solving approach to learning
provide mixed ability grouping across the curriculum
respect that learning does not just take place in the classroom
all cultural needs are considered and planned for
diversity is celebrated and supported
provide opportunities to develop learner agency
work collaboratively and take responsibility for all students
provide extensive opportunities for students to collaborate
Identify the barriers to learning and achievement and develop and implement strategies to overcome these.
Regularly monitor and assess student achievement against objectives in the New Zealand Curriculum statements. Maintain up-to-date individual student records and regularly report to parents/caregivers.
The values, key competencies, and learning areas will provide the basis for teaching and learning across the school. The school’s vision principles encompassed in GROW, alongside the cultural competencies will be integrated throughout instructional programmes. The Trentham curriculum will be dynamic, responsive, regularly built on and reviewed.
Provide a secular education as required by the Education Act 1964 (Section 77). Not one particular religion will be favoured if providing any religious education. Teachers are able to teach about religions, so long as they teach students about beliefs rather than instruct them on what to believe. Student participation in any sort of religious education is voluntary. Students are able to opt out and will not be discriminated against.
Document Statements of Intent in each area of the curriculum as follows; these are to be implemented by teachers and regularly reviewed for effectiveness.
