TE REO ME ONA TIKANGA MĀORI

PURPOSES
To embrace and foster pride in the bicultural context of New Zealand - Māori language and culture (protocols, customs, beliefs, traditions, rituals, ceremonies, values), and to honour the 3 principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi - partnership, protection and participation.
To increase the use of Te Reo Māori among the staff and students of the school.
To weave Te Reo and Tikanga Māori through all areas of school life.
To encourage the Trentham School community to participate in Te Reo and ngā Tikanga Māori.
To develop whanaunga with the local iwi, seeking guidance from Kaumatua and leaders from Orongomai Marae.
To be guided by the tikanga outlined by Orongomai Marae
GUIDELINES
The Trentham School Vision and all school documentation will empower Te Reo and Tikanga Māori.
To follow Trentham School’s Te Reo Implementation Plan, guided by the Te Aho Arataki Marau mō te Ako i Te Reo Māori - Kura Auraki (The Te Reo Māori Curriculum Guidelines), Tataiako, Ka Hikitia and the principles of Kura Ahurea.
Learning programmes will be planned to support student learning needs, guiding them through Taumata 1, 2 and 3 (curriculum level 1-3).
Support will be sought through liaison with the community, and whānau hui will be organised to share practice, celebrate student achievement and to collect whānau voice to guide learning programmes and school strategy.
Whānau will be informed of Karakia used at school.
