TRENTHAM SCHOOL STATEMENT OF INTENT
STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Next review date - November 2025
PURPOSE
To improve the capabilities of all staff and to enhance the educational opportunities of students.
GUIDELINES
Each year the Board will approve funding appropriate to the agreed professional learning needs of the staff and BOT.
Funding for professional learning will link clearly to the strategic and annual goals of the school. This will ensure that funding for professional learning is allocated to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
The Principal is responsible for the professional learning content and implementation for staff.
The following points will be considered when allocating funds for staff development:
Monitoring and evaluating the previous year’s programme
Meeting the needs of the major focuses for the year
Meeting the individual needs of staff as set out in their individual performance agreements
Courses that do not directly relate to No 4 will be avoided to minimise the risk of fragmentation and ineffective training. However, where a course meets a particular need, the principal may approve participation.
Staff attending courses will report back to their syndicate so new learning is shared across the team.
The Board will pay 50% of tertiary fees on successful completion of each relevant course or paper that will benefit both the individual and the school. Staff will have been employed for a minimum of 2 years. A written request for reimbursement must be submitted to the Board. The request must include the following:
What is intended to study
Reasons for wanting to undertake the study
Time frame for completion
Costs involved per year
How the school and students will benefit from the study
The Board will review and decide the relevance and benefit to the school prior to approval of reimbursement of up to 50% of tertiary fees.
The Board would expect the individual to remain at the school for at least 12 months, following the completion of their qualification, so the school may benefit from their study.
The Board, including the Principal, can limit the number of individuals that finance support is provided for.
