For this project, I had to create a sculpture using only wire. I decided to create a sculpture of a hat that I own because I thought it was a good size and I also thought wire would be a great material to make a hat because you can make it stand up and lay flat. The part that took me longest on this hat was connecting all of the straight wire pieces that made the hat's basic structure. I think this took me so long because there were so many of the straight wires that I had to make fishhook connections for each time I added one. I added swirls at the top of my hat because I thought it would be more interesting rather than just making it a flat top with straight wires stretching across from each side.
The only material I used for this project was wire. At one point, I thought that using the smaller and thinner wire would help me with my connections but I ended up not even using that method because the 18 gauge wire was a lot stronger. The pliers I used to manipulate the wire was probably the most important part of this project because they allowed me to shape the wire the way that I wanted. The wire clippers were also very important because I had so many pieces of wire that I needed to create this hat. Some pieces were small, and some were a lot bigger and the wire clippers made it really easy to just clip some off if I needed it.
I didn't know what I wanted to make for my project at first because I knew that in order to make it, I had to have my inspiration physically in front of me. I decided to make a hat because I had the perfect subject and it was big enough that it wouldn't be impossible to create. At the beginning, I did have to restart because I didn't make it big enough and I wanted the size to be as accurate. My goal was to create a hat that could fit on my head and not fall apart. I was able to accomplish that goal and I am very happy with how it turned out.
