My main idea for this project was to create a design that would look good printed. I wanted it to be something that I could carve out of my linoleum without any problems. I chose a snail to be my main subject for these prints because I thought it was cute and it is something you can look at to make you happy. I was able to create each print while having fun with the design and the printing process.
To make these prints, I first drew out my sketch on a piece of paper. After that, I transferred my drawing straight on to the linoleum block and went over it with a sharpie so it was easier to see and so it wouldn't smudge. After that, I started using ink. I had never done this before but it wasn't too difficult to figure out. I rolled out my ink on a block and then onto my linoleum block. My first few prints were a little choppy so what I did to fix that is I carved out deeper marks in my block and pressed the ink on the paper with more pressure and with more caution. It was fun trying prints with more than one color as well as just the simple black ink.
My idea for this was to create a happy design and I think a simple snail really did the job. When I first started making the prints, some lines were printed that were meant to be carved but I realized that I actually didn't mind the look of some extra lines. I think it added more texture to the design. In the end, I like what this design represents and I am glad the process of making it was fun.
