Artist Statement: For this project, I had to research two different ceramicists and create a peice that was inspired by their creations and pieces. I was a little nervous to start digging into this project because as I began researching different artists, I noticed that all of the work was very professional and complex and I realized that this project may be a little hard to make. However, As I began digging deeper, I started brainstorming different ways to adapt these artists techniques and practices into my own personal skill. I first came across Judd Schiffman, who I chose to inspire my project off of mostly because of this one piece he created of a realistic sculpture of a banana. He is the reason I got the idea to make a sculpture of food. I then began to research Richard Shaw and saw that he created really realistic pieces out of clay, and it is because of him that I decided I wanted to try and make my sculpture as realistic as possible. After more brainstorming and inspiration, I finally decided to create a realistic breakfast plate.
To begin this project, I made the plate, making sure to add a coil at the bottom of the plate to make it more like a real plate. I then molded out two waffles and had a little bite mark on one of them with butter on the top. After this, I molded out two little over easy eggs and decided to add some nice red strawberries in the extra space on my plate. After trying to make the food look as realistic as possible, it was time to glaze. I was nervous about the waffle glaze beauce I had to mix two glazes for them because there was not glaze that had the tan waffle color I desired but overall, I am happy with how it turned out. Glazing was a very long process because I wanted it to be clean and realistic, with three coats of each color.
In the end, I am really happy with how my breakfast plate turned out. I am grateful that I was able to find inspiration in these two wartist and rcreate something that I love. If I were to do this project again., i would maybe make my plate even bigger and add more food onto the plate. I would also try out underglaze. Overall, I really like the final product
