I’m going to admit this right off the bat; addiction and alcoholism are subjects that hit close to home for me as my family has dealt with them. I’ve seen first hand how they affect families especially the children. When a child sees their parents face addiction or alcoholism it can have a profound effect on them. When their parent goes through these struggles they might sometimes face abuse or neglect which isn’t very good for them. Abuse and neglect cause a ton of problems for the child that they carry on into adulthood. This is apart of the reason that addiction and alcoholism are often a multi-generational problem with it affecting people in the next generation. Now that does not mean that the child of an addict or alcoholic will become one themselves but it does give them a greater probability of becoming one. It’s important that families facing addiction or alcoholism work together for the sake of the children. Even more importantly it’s vital that schools work with those families facing addiction and alcoholism so they may get tools and or help to keep the family together to ensure the children have a safe and loving environment to grow up in. From experience when these things occur the children have a better chance at growing up to be able to follow their dreams which is what really matters most. We can’t write off the children of addiction or alcoholism because they truly need us. They need us to be there as a support system when times get hard.
