Expectation Of Our Students

There is something that absolutely has to get talked about in education and that is the fact that many educators put low expectations on certain students. Sadly there are many teachers that look at a students file and then will say this student will not amount to much and then not put too much into helping them. They look into the services the students need and expect those other teachers or specialist to handle those students. The only real thing they do is making sure the student can do the work it takes to pass the necessary test to get them to the next grade. Most teachers are not as completely heartless as I’m describing but they do often slack off a bit with certain students they deem needing a lot of help. Thankfully this isn’t every teacher but it is so wrong and has to stop. It Important to add right here that there are also teachers who go the ends of the earth for these kids and would do anything to them. Needless to say, whether a student is rich, poor, have disabilities, labeled ESE or ELL they can be a great student if given a chance. Every student needs their teachers to believe them.

When talking about students needing help these are those in poverty, have disabilities or labeled ESE or ELL. Sadly this can involve racial bias as well. All this is terrible and has to stop as it negatively affects students. These students know when this happens even when the teacher is trying to be polite about it because they can sense it in the teacher. This is being said in the knowledge of having had it happen to them and feeling completely defeated at times. This is why parent involvement is so important for every student. When this happens the only person who can help the student is the parents.
