There is a new type of pedagogy, or type of teaching, going around called Inquiry-Based Learning. In this pedagogy, the student has more control of the learning as they are asked a question to solve yet are allowed to different ways to show their answers. It puts the student at the forefront of their learning experience. With this style of teaching, students can gain more experience with experimentation and research as well as ways to express the knowledge they acquire. These are all real-world experiences that can help them later in life with any career they decide to pursue. This, of course, can be very beneficial to them not only with experience but it can let them understand that learning is a lifelong endeavor that doesn’t end with school.
Now even though this pedagogy is beneficial for students there are a few things that need to be considered. First is control of the classroom and whether it can be kept with this particular pedagogy. It can of course but it means changing the way we think about control. Next is the fact, depending on the different factors, students might have a hard time taking a little control because they are not used to it. When this happens it can be difficult to get them started however once they get a handle on everything it gets a little easier.
