Project Based Learning (PBL) is a different way for students to learn in the classroom. While in the classroom students learn in similar ways as in traditional learning environments. The real difference is in how students demonstrate their knowledge of the material they are learning about. The students show their knowledge by developing a public product or presentation for a real audience. This is because the students work on a project for an extended period of time that engages them in solving real-world problems or answering a complex question.
PBL is different because it requires the application of knowledge and skill. With this style of learning students don’t just remember content, they are being taught. They put their knowledge to work by creating something such as a verbal presentation or an object such as a graph. There is research on PBL that supports it helps increase student engagement and achievement, and it helps the student develop skills they need in their future careers.
