Planning for natural disasters is the best way to prepare for them, however, this can be a little scary for kids. We do various drills at school to help them prepare for difficult situations. For us adults, this seems like no big deal but for a kid, it can be overwhelming. The loud noise, people moving around, having to stand in line and wait around for the all-clear can be a lot for them, especially the young ones. The momentary chaos can be hard for them to handle. The fear doubles when something actually does happen like a tornado, earthquake, or hurricane. The weather and uncertainty can make kids very uneasy. In these situations, whether a drill or the real thing, we must do our best to keep kids calm and help them through their fear.
