Luke 7:16-17

The effect of the miracle: V. 16. And there came a fear on all; and they glorified God, saying1, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited His people. V. 17. And this rumor of Him went forth throughout all Judea and throughout all the region round about.

At this manifestation of almighty power which they had seen with their eyes, a fear and dread of the supernatural fell upon, took hold of, all the people. They felt the presence of God in this Man of Nazareth. But they did not acknowledge Him as the Messiah in spite of the greatness of the miracle. Merely as a great prophet they heralded Him; only as a visitation of God's grace did they look upon His coining.

Their faith and understanding fell far short of that of the centurion of Capernaum. A mere recognition and acceptance of Jesus as a great prophet and social reformer is not sufficient at any time. All men must know Him to be the one and only Savior of the world. Only this knowledge and trust will bring salvation.
