Nehemiah 3:13–14

The southwestern wall

The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the residents of Zanoah. They rebuilt it and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. They also repaired five hundred yards of the wall as far as the Dung Gate. 14 The Dung Gate was repaired by Malkijah son of Recab, ruler of the district of Beth Hakkerem. He rebuilt it and put its doors and bolts and bars in place.

These verses describe the wall that ran along the western edge of Ophel. The Valley Gate, the gate used by Nehemiah on his inspection trip, opened out onto the Tyropoean Valley, the valley that divided Ophel from Mount Zion. The Dung Gate was at the southern tip of the city. Its name implies that it was through the Dung Gate that garbage was carried to the dump outside the city.
