My first meeting with the owner of EMC CultuurOnderzoeken was in 2015 in De Rechtbank in Utrecht. I analyzed culture visit data for CultuurOnderzoek in 2015 as an entrepreneur. I also met my concolleague who also did some analysis for CultuurOnderzoek in an offline meeting later on. Most of the other meetings were online, through e-mail or phone, because the owner moved to Germany so his wife could have a career in music.
When the biggest project Rotterdam Festival started I asked an old colleague of Stogo Onderzoek + Advies to join the team. Rotterdam Festival had the team analyze almost all cultural outings in Rotterdam in Excel and SPSS. Rotterdam Festival didn't only get the amount of visitors and their preferences for cultural outings but also profiles of the different kind of visitors of the cultural outings in Rotterdam. Based on these analysis the new cultuurbeleid (cultural policy) for a few years was made by Rotterdam Festivals. I dedicated a whole blog to this project I did in 2015 for CultuurOnderzoek and the report that was produced by Rotterdam Festivals based on the analysis. Read the blog 'Independent Data Analyst For Rotterdam Festivals'.
CultuurOnderzoek had no employees anymore, but still had a network of cultural expression organizations which wanted their data analyzed. They were especially interested in who were their visitors and which programs they visited. Based on these data the cultural program of the cultural outings organizations was programmed. It was fun to do, because I got the data and knew from the quote what the organizations wanted and based on that I analyzed the data. I was the Excel and data specialist in this collaboration.
I made an end to this collaboration for the following reasons:
The payments got stalled all the time, because CultuurOnderzoeken was still paying IRS (belastingdienst) and the old employees their salaries that weren't paid when they were part of the company
I wanted a better fee due to the payment arrears
And I decided to hike the ***Camino Portugues to get an answer on the question what I really wanted to do as an entrepreneur and how to cope with stalled payment.
In all the years as an entrepreneur I only had a few clients that were late or stalled payment, but still this meant for me that I had to advance VAT and had to have a big buffer. I got my answer, because it stayed with two organizations not paying on time and one stalling it:
One of the two organizations was a peer support organization in 2014 when I was traveling the Pacific, writing guest blogs for them and making a course together with them. I had to hire a debt collector to get my money. I got my money through the debt collector. I wrote two blogs about this experience: 'Interviewing For A Guest Blog During My Pacific travels' and 'Should be happy with…' .
The other was CultuurOnderzoeken in 2015, which didn't agree with the new fee which could make my risk smaller. He paid the whole amount within a few reminders. I didn't need a debt collector.
The last one didn't get the chance to do this, because I got the alarm signs on time and quit them on time in 2021.
This makes me picky in who I work with and alert on signs, but this sometimes means not doing projects that seems great. These experiences also most of the time influence how I react if an organization doesn't pay on the day they say they will pay. I am now on a cross road to new kind of work and have to keep these experiences in mind, but also take some chances for my business Databeet and my chances to get my doctoral.

***I hiked the camino to think about what I wanted further from life and Databeet, not to party like some do on the Camino. I talked while hiking with my fellow hikers, but did not party with them or others. I am not a party animal and liked the quietness and calmness of the camino.
