In 2013, I searched Google for an Excel vacancy for zzp'ers and found an internal vacancy at Via Scholen. Even though it was an internal vacancy, I applied. I received an email stating that they would first assess their staff and then contact me. None of their employees responded and I was invited for an interview about teaching Excel at Via Scholen in 2013.
The Via Scholen is a network organization of 10 Christian secondary schools (high schools) in the bible belt of The Netherlands. The 10 schools operate independent, but work together on:
Recruiting new staff
Professionalizing staff
Learning from and with each other within the network
etc.
The Excel workshops were part of their efforts to professionalize their staff.
The Via Schools are all located in the Bible Belt. The Bible Belt is the most Christian part of The Netherlands, starting in Zeeland and running like a belt through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Gelderland, the Veluwe, and Overijssel. It's one of the most beautiful hiking areas in The Netherlands. I've hiked the Westerborkpad and several other hikes in the area. It's also the location of Staphorst and Barneveld. More about this part of the Bible Belt in my tourism blogs. I've taught Excel to the Via Scholen staff at the Veenendaal location and at one location in the Veluwe.
Via School focused on their employees' existing Excel knowledge and came back to me with a list of what they wanted to learn. I combined this list with the two basic Excel workshops I was teaching. This resulted in a beginner's Excel course and an advanced beginners Excel course. I taught these two courses a few times to Via School employees. Some took both workshops, and others one of the two.
The staff members who attended the Excel workshops all had different responsibilities at Via School, meaning they would all use Excel differently. I asked beforehand if they had any Excel files they wanted to share with their Excel questions. I received a few Excel files containing questions. These Excel files became part of the assignments. Instead of using my basic files, I replaced almost everything with the Via School staff's files and had them do the assignments in their own files. This led to discussions about the workshop's design, but ultimately, they were all able to use Excel. Working in their own files resulted in more questions than usual, because they were familiar with the files and knew what they wanted as a result in the Excel files. They also saw what their colleagues were doing in Excel and how they could work together or deliver data in a different way to make it easier for their colleagues in Excel.
I was an external Excel instructor for Via Scholen in 2013. I was an experiment, as a Via School employee was primarily a teacher in their program to up level the skills of all their employees. They asked in advance what their employees wanted to learn about Excel. The originally planned number of workshops had to be expanded, because there was a waiting list. The waiting list grew after the first Basic Excel workshop, and the advanced course also got a waiting list after the first Basic Excel workshop. More workshops were planned, and almost everyone on the waiting list was able to attend at least one of the two courses before I left for the Pacific in 2013. There was talk of repeating the two Excel courses and teaching WordPress classes in October 2014, but that never came to fruition.
