In 2015, my SPV'er asked me to track my food, sleep and work time. I came up with the rest of the variables myself, because I wanted to hike the *Camino Portugues in May 2016. I successfully did it: I walked from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela, almost 700 km in 40 days. I am officially a peregrina (pilgrim). The data in the last two sheets are not mine, these are data to show how the tables and graphs work.
I created an Excel template to track how much I slept, what activities I did that day, what I ate and drank, and how I felt. For a while, I filled the Excel template every day with data. To see patterns, a graph is a better tool than tables. I added a few graphs to the template. The Excel template consists of 15 tabs. One for each month of the year and two with data per year and a tab with explanation.
The Memo tab contains notes on the use of this Excel template. There are definitions for day and night, standing work and computer work. There is an explanation of the different tabs in the Health Monitor template. Standing work means doing fieldwork, as I do for IPSOS I&O and did for Inview, Forum Research & Onderzoeksbureau Labyrinth. Computer work is the time I spent behind my laptop.
The data is entered in the Month tab. When I filled in how many hours I slept, how often I was awake, etc., this data is immediately visible in the graphs above the table. When I fill in an entire month, I can see a pattern in the number of hours I slept, worked, etc. at the end of the month. At the end, in column AG, I see the average working hours and sleeping hours, etc. for that month. In column AH, the totals for all the days of that month are added together.
I don't have to fill in anything on the Annual totals tab (Jaartotalen). As soon as I fill in something in one of the month tabs, it is included in the calculations in the tables on the other tabs and also in the graphs. This gives me a good overview of how my sleep pattern was over a year, how much I worked, and so on.
I don't have to do anything on the Annual average tab (Jaar gemiddelde), everything is automatically calculated for me and displayed in the graphs. On this tab I can see how I did on average per month in terms of sleep, I was awake, etc. Here I can compare the months and maybe discover patterns.
*I hiked the camino to think about what I wanted further from life and Databeet, not to party like some do on the Camino. I talked while hiking with my fellow hikers, but did not party with them or others. I am not a party animal and liked the quietness and calmness of the camino.
