I was working for E-Quality (2006), when The Nederlandse Gezinsraad asked for help with their research on families in Rotterdam. After two trail interviews on a colleague in Amsterdam and a former colleague in Den Hague, I was sent to interview all kinds of families with kids in the neighborhoods Noord, Pendrecht and Hoogvliet of Rotterdam.
The respondents were all kinds of families with kids. Sometimes I interviewed the father, another time the mother and another time both parents at the same time. The interviews were held in three different types of neighborhoods in Rotterdam: Pendrecht, Hoogvliet and Noord. The interviews were qualitative interviews about the family friendliness of Rotterdam. The interview consisted of 4 parts:
Oral questionnaire
Sorting tasks
Written questionnaire
Depth interview.
The whole interview was recorded. In the depth interview the topics that were covered in the questionnaires and sorting task could be elaborated. I, the interviewer, could ask the respondents to elaborate about an answer they had given in the questionnaire or sorting tasks and they could point to a topic raised in the questionnaire or sorting tasks they wanted to talk more about. The total interview took on average about one hour and a quarter. The depth interview took as long as was needed to cover all topics. I as the interview had to led the parents elaborate, but not that they were repeating themselves again and again.
After the interviews were held a team of typist were typing out the interviews literarily. Each important sentence was coded in categories. This was necessary to report about the findings in the interviews. I was part of the team that coded the sentences from the interview into categories.
I enjoyed doing the interviews and coding the interviews, but the opinion I have about having children since I was 10 didn't change with interviewing families. I still now in 2024 don't want kinds and know that since 1987 when I became 10. The interviews took place in 2006 and they didn't change my mind, nothing will change my mind about having children. I don't mind others having children, as long as they don't keep bothering me about having children.
