How WordPress With Kids Came About
One of my WordPress clients (Coaching in de Zeilboot/ Gelukkige Kinderen) took her kid with her to Seats2Meet when I was working there. They were going to visit the Seats2Meet Lab. I went with them and got to meet the robots, 360 Camera, 3D printing, etc. The client told me she was setting up a project with one of the entrepreneurs working in the lab to teach these kind of tech at primary school. She asked if WordPress could be taught to primary school kids. I said Yes!
The Workshops WordPress For Kids
Together with my client and her kid I thought about how WordPress could be taught to primary school kids. Two try-out workshops were set up and fully booked. The age of the kids ranged from 8 till 11. Because It was a try-out I lent out two of my domain names to the workshops. The kids had to work together to make one website. First the kids mapped out their theme with mind mapping and decided for which of the themes the website was going to be built. After that the kids built the WordPress website by following the instruction I had on paper and the instruction I was giving. I was very surprised how easy all the kids learnt WordPress. They even had me calling my hosting party to fix a bug the kids found.
The Try-Out Workshops Were A Success, But ...
After the two try-out workshops WordPress for kids I set down with my client a former primary school teacher to talk about the try-outs:
The parents were happy that they met me the teacher before leaving the kids for the try-out workshops
The kids had the WordPress website to show afterwards. This was a big bonus for them and their parents. I left the website for a while with their design and theme so they could show it off
The Mind mapping the kids did before starting to build the website made it clear that if this project was going further each kid had to had their own domain to build their own website. Each theme the kids came up with was worth a website. This should be included in the price
Also it became clear that my client doesn't like WordPress, but want it taught at primary school. That is why I was building her website 😀. This meant I had to find others to help with the workshop. This one was an easy one. One of my 'conculega' entrepreneurs was interested to do the workshop together
Also the marketing was something to think of. I don't want kids so I didn't have parents with primary school kids in my business circle. And my clients network with primary school kids was too small to do this project on a large scale
And my client wanted to concentrate on her coaching with sailing business.
This meant that this project stayed at two try-out workshops WordPress with Kids in 2015.
