A few days ago I was at the National Science Communication Day that was held in Nieuwe Buitensociëteit in Zwolle. It was a reencounter with Zwolle, because Zwolle is part of the 9 Hanseatics of The Netherlands (9 Hanzesteden). These 9 cities have been promoting themselves together from 2023 as the Hanseatic cities of The Netherlands, because of their role in the Hanseatic history of The Netherlands. I am interested in how these 9 cities are promoting themselves through their shared Hanseatic history by using city marketing.
The theme of National Science Communication Day 2024 (Nationale Wetenschapscommuncatiedag) was 'Navigeren in de Tussentijd' ('Navigating the In-between'). I was interested in this symposium because I wanted to update my knowledge about communication in science. I followed the main program with lectures and debates about influencing, miscommunication, getting scientific research in the newspapers the right way so that it can have social value (maatschappelijke waarde), etc.
I wasn't aware of the Hanseatic history of The Netherlands till I saw a flyer announcing the Hanzejaar 2023 in the 9 Eastern cities of The Netherlands in Deventer. I delved into the 9 Hanseatic cities through hiking them, going through books and the archive about the Hanseatic time. My hunger for more knowledge about the Hanseatic time led me to the Hanseatic Symposium in Theodorakapel in Zwolle in 2023 where there were two days full of lectures about Hanseatic time, the back then to open European Hanse museum in Lubeck and medieval route planner (Viabundus).
Zwolle is one of the two dependances of the archive collection of Overijssel. This Overijssel archive shares a building with ANNO museum. The Anno museum has a collection about the Hanseatic time in Zwolle. I went there to see pictures and city marketing artifacts of the Hanseatic union which still meets each year in a different city, artifacts of the Hanseatic time and to go through old documents of Hanseatic time like certificates, letters and bookkeeping, etc.
The Hanseatic history is still to be seen in all the 9 eastern city of The Netherlands in the street patron, buildings and street names. To see all this beauty there is the Hanseatic route book to walk the Hanseatic city of Zwolle or there are tours which shows the Hanseatic history in the city. I did both. I walked by myself the city of Zwolle with the city walk books 'Stadswandeling door Hanzestad Zwolle' and 'Vrouwenwandeling Zwolle: Ontmoet nu de vrouwen van toen. Een wandelroute door de binnenstad'. I did also a guided Hanseatic history tour with Vrije Academy. These are all easy city walks. There are also hikes in and around Zwolle like Westerbork path about the Second World War and Hanzestedenpad about the Hanseatic history.
In 2016 Late writer Christine Blanke asked me if I wanted to build her website. She was going to blog about small things in life, make an audio tour and have a book published. I said yes and worked on her website (Stemmenexpert) till her book was published in 2019. Every year she and I met in person to discuss what she wanted to change on her website and I made the changes. I was on Curaçao when she and I were making plans to meet in The Netherlands and talk about the changes she wanted on her website for her book that was going to be published. I never met Christine again, because she died when she was making the last changes to her book at the end of 2018. I made the changes to her website neccessary for her book 'Wachten tot het avontuur voorbij is' (Waiting for the adventure to be over) which was getting published together with a friend of hers and her husband.
