Some conventions have a pre-day. Normally I don’t do pre-days. I went to a lot of WordPress and ‘Dag van de Stad’ days without joining the pre-day program. I changed my ways with the Tourism Top 2024 in Venlo, Limburg. The pre-day was during the day and it promised me a visit to the surroundings of Venlo.
I had already been in Venlo, because of the Pieterpad. There are two stages of the Pieterpad with starting or ending point in Venlo. The Pieterpad can be walked from both sides. I remember walking into Venlo along the Maas. The first part is beautiful along the Maas till I got to the center part. I was wondering why all those people were smoking along the river and it wasn’t a pretty side. In the center there was a queue queueing around the block. My first thought was they were standing in the queue to buy tickets for a concert of a famous singer or so. But then reality hit they were there for the most popular product of The Netherlands which I don’t like, not even the smell from far. I don’t use drugs and I don’t like the smell.
Although this encounter with Venlo wasn’t pretty. I liked the surroundings especially going to Swalmen. This is a very pretty part of the Pieterpad. One of the best. I even considered moving to Swalmen for a second during the hike.
When I subscribed for the Tourism Top I was encouraged to subscribe also for the Pre-Tourism Top day. It promised Castles, greens and water. I think I was spoilt with what I saw, because it was on the opposite side of where the Pieterpad stages goes through. Which meant I met a new part of Limburg along the Maas.
I was picked up by a coach bus at the Venlo station, not a stranger to me because I did fieldwork at this station in the past. The first stop was Maashof a beautiful family business owned hotel. When I walked between the restaurant and the hotel I saw lots of water and then I saw they were fishing! Yes, fishing for real fish! Not one but a lot of people. It looks strange, but also calming and beautiful. I set on the terrace to have lunch and between the chitchat I could observe the lake, the fish and the fishing.
Back on the bus, the group left for De Keverberg castle through fields with vegetables and the gold from Limburg. In spring, Limburg is a must visit to taste the beautiful dishes with asparagus. Now only the asparagus plant was visible.
The pre-Tourism day did not just consist of sitting on the bus, having lunch and seeing the beauty of Limburg. The group was asked to think about the future of De Keverberg castle, especially in the winter. Overlooking the Maas in this beautiful semi-historic and semi-modern castle the presentations were held about how the castle could attract visitors in the winter.
On the walk to the ferry to cross the Maas the group was surprised with strawberry ice cream with real berries in it on a cone. That’s why I liked to have lunch on the Pieterpad. I have the pictures to show the delicious food I had on the Pieterpad.
Part of Steyl is still a monastery and the other part is abandoned and in very bad condition. The NGO Boei is renovating a building in Steyl with subsidy, when there is a destination for the building. The boiler house (Ketelhuis) and the part where the monastery brewery is nested (Kloosterbrouwerij) have been renovated. The monastery brewery will start in April 2025.
