One of the things The Netherlands is famous for is tulips. Originally the tulips are from Turkey. The Dutch made the tulip their own by making them available in all shades, color, and shapes. Most of the tulips are from the area around Keukenhof, the province of Noord- and Zuid-Holland. It is a beauty to hike or ride the bike in the area around Keukenhof before the flowers are picked and send to other countries.
As a child I went once to the Keukenhof and saw all the tulips there. It was mostly only tulips back then. It wasn’t that really interested at the time, because as a child I thought all flowers looked the same. But now after the lockdown I appreciate the flowers more and more, especially in the city. The bees are back in town because there is green and flowers again in the cities. Some were planted guerilla style and others by seeds donated by the municipals. The cities look more friendly with flowers and greens.
My second visit to Keukenhof was in 2022. Since living in Eindhoven I started playing tourist in my own country, The Netherlands. Like I do some days on my travels outside The Netherlands. Keukenhof was on my to do list, but with lockdowns it was postponed till now. I liked what I saw, lots of flowering of the greens. Not only tulips, but all kinds of flowers that grow in The Netherlands. I was lucky because I was there when the yellow flowers where blooming. Yellow is one of the colors I like most for flowers. In the short time Keukenhof is open during spring there are color periods for the flowers blooming.
I went to the Keukenhof early in the morning and during the week. In vacation time and during the weekends it is very busy. There can be around 1 million visitors in one weekend. Keukenhof only opens in spring for a short period. It is worth a visit. Just like other touristy things in The Netherlands like the Cheese market in Alkmaar and Giethoorn, the Venice of The Netherlands. Keukenhof is a must see and planning is everything!
Next to the Keukenhof in Lisse there is the National museum 'De Zwarte Tulip'. It is worth a visit to know more about how the flower bulbs are grown. There is a part dedicated to the tulip, but other flowers and information about the region are also on display.
