Although Tiel is not a city I wanted to visit again, I did six things in Tiel. It is a car city, it looks a bit shabby and a bit poor. The only beauties of the city are the river and the public areas of RAR archive building.
Although I focus on the 9 Hanseatic cities that work together in my blog, I know that there are more Hanseatic cities. Tiel is a city with a rich Hanseatic history and certainly deserves a mention when we talk about 'Hanze' cities in The Netherlands.
Because I had to be in Tiel I decided to hike the city center. There are several routes possibilities to get to know the center of Tiel. All routes are for sale at the VVV in Tiel and/or can be downloaded online for free. Some parts of the center are nice, but be careful.
The museum Flipje & Streekmuseum Tiel is located in an historic building in the city center. I liked the exhibition about the fruit industry in and around Tiel. There are also exhibitions about Tiel during the Second World War and the origin of the city of Tiel in this museum.
Tiel has a big library for a small town. The library of Tiel has a theater, just like Rotterdam. In Rotterdam the theater took over the library, but in Tiel there is still library left.
The archive RAR in Tiel is quiet and well maintained. This archive is one of last archives where people can just walk in and request an archive without a reservation and appointment. The opening hours and days are royal. I wish I needed more of their archive for my blog and PhD plan.
The 'Oud Schrift' course in Wijk Bij Duurstede was cancelled and the teacher of the 'Huizen onderzoek' course in Wijk Bij Duurstede recommended to follow 'Oud Schrift' in Tiel at the RAR Archive. By following this course, I realised that some 'handschrift' from historical periods are difficult to read. That is why transcribing is essential and must be done accurately.
