When I lived in The Netherlands as a child (1984-1988), I remember going to Apenheul with my family. I always associated Apeldoorn with Apenheul, although I never went there again.
I have visited Paleis Het Loo a few times. The garden and the forest around it are a paradise to walk through. The museum itself is designed in such a way that the visitor has a lot of space and the museum does not feel too crowded despite the number of visitors on a sunny day. The latest exhibition I went to was 'Tegenspel de eeuw van vrouwelijk koningschap'.
My apartment in Nieuwegein is work in progress I never want again. There was a lot wrong with it when I took it and it takes too long to have them repair it, while I am entitled to it. On November 4 2024, I was going to Dag Van De Stad in Apeldoorn when I had to call Portaal again for regular maintenance, which they had forgotten to carry out. Fortunately, that call was the last for that specific maintenance. But I am still calling and e-mailing them for the things that should have been repaired before I moved into this apartment in 2019.
The event 'Dag van de Stad' takes place each year in November in a different city in The Netherlands. As an Urban Geographer, I am interested in this day to see what the government wants to do with the Dutch cities. There are lectures, workshops and excursions to interesting locations in the city where the event takes place that year.
I wrote a blog about conducting a qualitative interview and my role as a supervisor for Labyrinth. The one interview I conducted for this project took place in Apeldoorn. The blog is called 'Supervising An Interview Team Which Spoke Papiamento To Interview People From The Dutch Caribbean In Dutch'.
Apeldoorn station is one of the many stations in The Netherlands where I did fieldwork for IPSOS I&O. I like this station and I am happy to do fieldwork on this station.
I was invited for the event 'Gendergelijkheid in de regio' at Workmode Apeldoorn by one of the founders of Workmode. I was invited because I was interested in renting a desk at Workmode at the time and I worked for E-Quality (Atria) in the past. Workmode organizes a number of events in the regions the Workmode offices are located and in addition one large event annually.
Workmode is a workplace for women only, where I as a woman can rent a desk to work at. I have visited their offices in Utrecht, Rotterdam and Apeldoorn. Although I liked the way it is setup and the design of the offices, I opted for another workspace at that time. Workmode also organizes events and men are invited to some of their events.
In addition to Apenheul, I associate Apeldoorn with the head office of the IRS (belastingdienst). I have never been there myself, but a former CBS colleague went to work there after the birth of his child because it was closer to his home.
Buren is located near Apeldoorn and I visited Buren in 2020 for an exhibition about women who were working for 40 years in operational service with the Marechaussee in the Marechausseemuseum in 2020, Zij aan Zij (Side by Side). This museum is no longer located in Buren, but is now part of the collection of the Nationaal Militair Museum in Soesterberg.
I have been walking the Marskramerpad since last year. I had planned to start this LAW after finishing the Hanzestedenpad, but because of the high water on the Hanzestedenpad last year I walked a few stages on the Marskramerpad. Not yet stage 8 from Deventer to Klarenbeek. Klarenbeek is part of Apeldoorn.
Hoenderloo, like Klarenbeek, is part of Apeldoorn, which is why I mention the Marskramerpad stage that finishes in Hoenderloo. I have not yet walked this stage, stage 9. I started the Marskramerpad near my home, Utrecht, because of high water on the Hanzestedenpad. I hope to complete the Marskramerpad this year, 2025.
* I worked at E-Quality from 2005 - 2007. E-Quality merged and became Atria in 2012.
