To hike the Pieterpad completely I stayed in Maastricht, Ommen, Assen and Pieterburen, because for some stages it wasn't possible to travel from home, hike and travel back. From Pieterburen I did the last three stages: Groningen - Winsum, Winsum - Pieterburen and Pieterburen. Most people start the Pieterpad in Pieterburen or on the St. Pietersberg in Maastricht. I started my Pieterpad journey in 2019 in Zelhem and hiked first the sourthern part of the Pieterpad, before hiking the northern part of the Pieterpad. I finished in Pieterburen in 2020. I hiked them all, not in one go but stage by stage. With finishing the Pieterpad I completed my first long distance walk in The Netherlands. I opted to travel from home Eindhoven 2019/ Nieuwegein 2020 to one of the stages and back after hiking. Except for the stages around Maastricht, Ommen, Assen, and Pieterburen. In these four cities I stayed in an hotel and hiked the stages from an hotel.
Pieterburen is the official start or finish of the Pieterpad depending on which stage are hiked first and last. I opted to finish in Pieterburen. I finished in September 2020 just after hiking season was over in Pieterburen. A lot of the food courts were closed. I think they are food courts. There are stalls with benches in front of them on a square. There were a few hikers still starting and finishing in September. It must be very busy in the hiking season seeing the amount of stalls and benches.
In 2020 I was doing two projects for WeConnect, building the first version of their website United Care Caribbean and making and tracking their total budget and a few of their project budgets. I met in person with the two people of Weconnect once a month in Amsterdam and I frequently had online meetings with them about the projects. When I was hiking the last stages of my Pieterpad around Pieterburen I had also an online meeting with WeConnect and someone of the ministry, who was the appointed contact person for the United Care Caribbean project. After the online meeting I hiked one of the last three stages, because of the meeting and the weather I opted to do those three stages not in order, but the shortest one of the three after the online meeting. When I hike and have meetings of have to work I sometimes switch the order of the stages or I opt to walk the stage backwards, luckily most stages of the long distance paths in The Netherlands can be hiked backwards also. On the Camino de Santiago it would be more difficult, because it is arrowed to hike one-way.
Pieterburen was also known for the Seal Sanctuary, besides being the finish /starting point of the Pieterpad. In 2020 I visited the Seal Sanctuary which was still in Pieterburen. In 2024 the Seals Sanctuary was moved to Lauwersoog. It is a must see. It is animal friendly. It is actually an hospital for seals and not a zoo. I can't swim with seals, but I can see them swimming in the pools while the seals are recovering. Most seals are released back into the Wadden area after their recovery.
The official starting point/ finish in Pieterburen is at cafe 'Bij de buren van Pieter' at a official sign. In September 2020 I was standing there after finishing my Pieterpad. I had hiked all the stages. I completed my first long distance path in The Netherlands, not in one go like I did the Camino Portugues in 2016, but stage by stage in 2019 and 2020.
