I am all set. I am going to start my own company. I have registered with the Chamber of Commerce and I am ready to start. The only thing missing is a website. In addition to the questions about what I want on it and the design, there is also the question: Am I going to build it myself or will I hire someone? The answer to this question depends on the following factors:
Do I have time to build it myself?
Do I have the patience to figure things out?
Am I good with computer programs?
Do I want a complicated site?
If I give myself the honest answers to these questions, I will find out what the best option is for me.
If I choose to have my website built by someone else, there are also many options depending on my preferences and budget, namely:
Custom built usually the website is made from scratch in PHP by the programmer/website builder. This is also the most expensive option
Another option is to build with CMS systems (content management system) such as Joomela or WordPress and then have it partly customized. Even then, a programmer is involved, who adapts everything to the 'standard' WordPress or Joomela site. This option is slightly cheaper than the previous one
A cheap, but no less interesting option is to have the website built with the standard possibilities of themes (designs) and plugins in WordPress or Joomela and with minimal coding
A variant of this last option is a guide to building my website. I build and someone watches and helps me find my way in WordPress or Joomela.
I think the choice for WordPress or Joomela is a personal choice depending on:
My own preferences
Experiences of others
Which builder I choose
I myself have worked with both Joomela and WordPress and notice that I experience WordPress as more intuitive than Joomela for users who can't code. And easier to explain to users.
My website is ready. Built myself, helped or had it built, it doesn't matter maintenance is required. With a custom-built website, the technical update will probably continue to be done by the builder unless I am knowledgeable.
If I have chosen WordPress or Joomela, I can choose to do the maintenance myself or have it done. Maintenance involves more than just placing content on my website and adjusting my texts every now and then. Namely keeping plugins, themes and WordPress itself up to date. Many people forget the latter and then their website is hacked or no longer works optimally. It is better to make the necessary updates once a week/month than to have to deal with a hacked site!
