How Reality Keeper Started
After creating a development plan and budget for the app Reality Keeper, three grants were awarded to build and test the app between 2017 and 2019. The initial concept was developed during the Dutch Health Hackathon, where a prototype was tested. At that stage, it did not yet carry the name Reality Keeper, and only basic functions were implemented, but they worked during the hackathon test. The Dutch Health Hackathon team behind the early prototype was advised to apply for grants so the app could be developed into a fully functioning product.

The Reality Keeper Pre‑Test Report
During the Dutch Health Hackathon, the early testing of the app provided such valuable insights that the development team decided to conduct additional pre‑tests with potential users. These tests included interviews, focus groups, and surveys. The Reality Keeper Pre‑Test Report describes these first rounds of user feedback and outlines the wishes expressed for the future app. The research confirmed a clear need for Reality Keeper. Based on these wishes, the initial requirements for the basic version of the app were discussed within the Reality Keeper team and with the developer. Not all wishes could be fulfilled. The most important request was that all data should be stored locally rather than in a central big‑data environment. Because Reality Keeper treats all generated data as personal data, it remains on the user’s phone and is not uploaded to any external database. This decision had several consequences:
No data research: The team could not analyze user data, because it never left the users’ devices.
Personal‑data handling: All information was treated as privacy‑sensitive and stored only on the user’s own phone.
User‑based development: Further development required additional interviews and focus groups, since usage data could not be collected.
Over time, Reality Keeper was updated several times with new features in both app stores (Apple & Android).

The Survey, Interviews & Focus Groups
The survey was an online questionnaire created in Office by the Reality Keeper team. I was responsible for digitizing the survey and coordinating all online survey activities. The analysis of the survey results was carried out by me together with the Reality Keeper team member with whom I co‑developed the Big Data e‑course for Laudius. Most of the focus groups and interviews were conducted by me, with a few handled by the project manager. I also analyzed all interviews and focus‑group data. The results of the pre‑testing focus groups are included in the Pre‑Testing Report Reality Keeper.
