The department of Human Geography at the university of Utrecht and Stichting Stogo organize each year together in September a contest for all the students of this department who finished their thesis in that academic year. I was challenged by my colleagues at Stogo Onderzoek + Advies to participate as where other colleagues in the years after me.
It is a nice contest, which gives the winners a small price money and the others: flowers 😊. Each year there is a panel of judges that each read a few thesis to get to a short list. I was on the shortlist. After the shortlist is made, each member of the jury gets to read two theses. After that the whole panel of judges decides together who gets the three money prices.
Later the department merged with Geography so more master students could send in their thesis. Also there were changes in the prices and the presentation ceremony.
For my thesis I used a database of SCP about how people spend their free time. I looked at their visits to cultural outings and tv viewing habits. Therefore I used statistical analysis to see whether living in the city or outside the city, gender, age, ethnicity and education played a role in the cultural outing they attended and whether they watched tv.
