Equipment

Renpaarden may be played on the cells of a 9x9 square grid (as shown above) or at the intersections of an 8x8 grid. Also required for play are eighteen each of black and white counters, called stones for this game.

History

Renpaarden was invented by the Dutch games inventor and musician Fred Horn in 1981.

Objective

The objective of both players is to cross the board with all of their stones to attain all of the original cells of their opponent.

Play

Alternate turns entail a move of a single friendly counter as the Knight in Orthochess to an unoccupied intersection. Specifically, counters move two cells in any orthogonal direction, and then one cell at a right angle to the first half of the move; or one cell in any straight line, and then two at a right angle to the first half of the move. Also, jumping in this fashion, a counter may jump to a cell occupied by a enemy stone and, in that case, it may jump again. This move must be repeated until the stone lands on an empty cell.
