Campaign

Campaign does not use a set opening position and the game begins with board completely vacant. The above opening position, however, is one of many that can be used.

Equipment

A 10x10 square grid, one black and one white chess knight, and approximately 40 each of black and white counters are required for play.

History

Campaign was invented by Chris Huntoon in 2001 and was inspired by Gomoku and the puzzle Knight's Tour.

Objective

A player wins the game by making a row of five friendly counters or by stalemating the opponent's knight. The winning row of five may include more than five counters, i.e. a player may win with an overline of six or more counters.

Play

The game commences when one player drops both of the knights on any two squares on the board. (All pieces are played inside the cells.) The other player then chooses which color to play and starts the game. Alternate turns entail the hippogonal movement of a player's knight to a vacant cell and then dropping a friendly counter at the cell where the knight started its move. The hippogonal movement is exactly the same as that of the Knight in Orthochess, that is two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally. The complete move therefore looks like the letter L.
