NCEA Level 2 Design and Visual Communication

Aims

To build on the foundation of skills and understanding established in Level 1 to develop innovative solutions for spatial, product and graphic design contexts.

Course Content

Learners work with a design thinking process in order to develop and refine ideas for a ferry terminal at Steamer Basin in Dunedin. In order to develop an in depth understanding of user needs and context, learners go on a Monarch Wildlife Cruise Tour. Through exploring possible outcomes learners develop their understanding of specific spatial design knowledge. They then develop seating for their terminal in order to develop their understanding of product design. Finally learners present their resolved outcomes for an audience evaluation.

This then informs ideas that are developed for spatial and product design outcomes. In this process, they explore the relevant implications within both fields. Learners then investigate graphic design conventions and apply them to promote their design ideas to an audience.

Skills

Through studying Design and Visual Communication, learners are encouraged to be innovative, creative, and to show initiative. They learn teamwork and communication skills.

Assessment

Learners produce a portfolio that is assessed against specific internal achievement standards throughout the year. Selected work is then sent for assessment of the external achievement standards.
