NCEA Level 2 Food & Nutrition

Aims 

The aim is for learners to enhance their understanding through the process of investigating, challenging and designing nutritional options. This course offers the opportunity to experience and participate in a wide range of activities in a variety of contexts. This course will help learners’ to identify and reflect on factors that influence people’s choices and behaviours that relate to well-being and nutrition. It aims to enable learners to be able to make informed decisions about food that will contribute to the well-being of themselves and others. 

Course Content

Learners will develop their nutritional knowledge in terms of sustainable food practices and planning food for individuals with specific needs. Through interviews and research learners will gain an appreciation of interpersonal and societal issues and how they affect people in their day-to-day life. Learners will also gain understanding by participating in practical food-related activities that encompass a wide variety of contexts. They will be encouraged to look at local produce and use this in a sustainable manner, specific nutrition for individuals, participate in health promotion. The course consists of three theory lessons and one practical lesson each week.

Assessment 

A variety of assessment tasks are set over the year, these will include written and practical components.  There is one external examination.

Qualification gained 

Full course completion — 19 credits in NCEA Level 2 Food and Nutrition

Prior knowledge required 

Recommended study in Physical Education, Health and a keen interest in Food and Nutrition.  Exceptional circumstances may be considered on an individual basis after consultation with the HoD and the Year Level Dean.
