NCEA Level 3 Music
Aims
Learners learn how to work individually and collaboratively and to explore ways of creating, interpreting and representing ideas within music. Learners have opportunities to further their own creative potential as they sing, play instruments, read symbols and notations, record and analyse and appreciate music. As learners develop their ability to communicate musically with increasing sophistication, they lay a foundation for lifelong enjoyment of and participation in music.
Level 3 provides students with a choice of courses:
Making Music or
Music Studies — in depth study of music scores, music periods, and styles or
a combination of both courses

Assessment
There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year. The course will be made up from a mix of the standards shown below.
Qualification gained
NCEA Music Level 3 - full course completion a maximum of 24 credits.
This can be made up from a range of the above achievement standards. A minimum full time course is 18 credits.
Prior knowledge required
Prior knowledge acquired through NCEA Music Level 2 is preferred or performance learners should have a background in music. Direct entry is possible after consultation with TIC Music, HOD Arts, and Year Level Dean

Making Music
91416 3.1 8 Credits Internal Present two programmes of music as a featured soloist
91418 3.3 4 Credits Internal Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing two substantial pieces as a member of a group
91419 3.4 8 Credits Internal Compose three original pieces of music that demonstrate secure technical skills to communicate musical intention
91849 3.11 8 Credits Internal Compose three original songs that express imaginative thinking
Music Studies
91421 3.6 4 Credits External Demonstrate understanding of harmonic and tonal conventions in a range of music scores
91424 3.9 4 Credits Internal Create two arrangements for an ensemble
91425 3.10 6 Credits Internal Research a music topic
Students must do a performance standard i.e. 91416 and/or 91418. Plus a choice between composition, song writing and arrangement i.e. 91419, 91849 or 91424.
Students select from the remaining standards to make up a 18-24 credit course.
