YEAR 11 Science

Aims 

To develop a greater understanding of a range of general science concepts and to further develop the learners ability to make connections between the science taught in class and the world around them.

Course Content 

The course will include a large proportion of ideas that are foundational for Level 2 Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

• Living World: genetics, variation and natural selection, microorganisms, ecology, physiology

• Material World: atoms, ions and compounds, acids and bases, reaction rates, carbon chemistry and metals

• Physical World: mechanics, heat and heat transfer, energy transfer by waves, simple electrical ideas

• Planet Earth and Beyond: solar system dynamics, interacting systems between atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere

Assessment 

In class assessments, school examinations.

This course may include 1 NCEA standard, either an internal or an external. To be confirmed at the beginning of the 2024 school year.

Prior knowledge required

A satisfactory level of achievement in Year 10 Science
