NCEA Level 3 Biology
Aims
To further develop an understanding of the dynamic functioning of individual organisms and populations within their environment
To recognise the place of Biology within the wider societal context of New Zealand and the Pacific basin
To investigate scientific processes and theories and how these influence our understanding of genetic change
Course Content
The course extends learners knowledge of how organisms interact with their environment.
A socio-scientific issue, such as stem cell research, is investigated and learners are required to formulate a personal view and a plan of action around the issue
Genetic change in individuals and populations is studied using traditional selective breeding and genetic engineering as possible contexts
The maintenance of blood glucose levels and thermoregulation in the human body are the context for the study of homeostatic mechanisms
An in depth study of the evolution of humans investigates trends in biological and cultural change
Extension opportunities are available for those learners wishing to undertake the Scholarship examination
Assessment
The programme is split between three internal achievement standards that require learners to do a reasonable amount of individualised research and two external achievement standards assessed in November as part of the national NCEA examinations.
Qualifications gained
NCEA Biology, 18 credits at Level 3
Prior knowledge required
Of the five compulsory Level 2 Biology achievement standards, learners must have achieved a minimum of one external assessment and one internal assessment. Learners who have not reached this level of achievement will be considered on a case by case basis in consultation with the HoD and the Year Level Dean. Achievement in formal tests and school examinations will be taken into consideration.
