Languages

Learning an additional language teaches learners to have a greater understanding of and empathy with people of cultures different to their own. They participate more effectively and responsibly in a multi-cultural world if they know another language. It also helps them to gain a more profound understanding of their own culture.  The study of foreign languages teaches and encourages respect for other peoples: it fosters an understanding of the interrelation of language and human nature. Studying foreign languages improves skills, such as analytical skills, problem solving, dealing with abstract concepts, creativity,  communication skills, listening skills and memory, required for other subject areas. When combined with business skills, being bilingual can give a competitive edge in the global economy.  Foreign languages open the door to art, music, dance, fashion, cuisine, film, philosophy, science and more. 

French

Studying the French language allows learners to enhance awareness of their own language and culture. Throughout their years in French, learners learn to communicate effectively in both written and spoken language on a range of cultural and current issues including art, tourism, future plans, environment and literature. They also develop and understanding and appreciation of the role the French language plays in the global community, and may also have the opportunity to participate in exchanges with France in the future. 

Spanish

The Spanish language is the second most widely spoken language in the world. By studying Spanish, learners enhance awareness of their own language and culture through in depth study of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. Throughout their years in Spanish, learners learn to communicate effectively on a number of cultural and current issues, including language, food, cinema and important figures. They also develop and understanding of the growing inks between New Zealand and South America, and may have the opportunity to participate in an exchange with Chile in the future.
