Title: I Wish I Was As Beautiful As Them
WidthxHeight: 8"x6"
For this project, we had to follow our question. Mine is "What makes a character likable?" So I wanted to make a relatable piece. I tried to make the main character gender neutral but also rather large because I wanted people who struggle with weight gain problems to really feel this piece regardless of what gender the character is. So I tried to make them look as relatable as possible.
The subject of my work is a large man/woman looking at skinny/healthy people. The drawing was made with black and white charcoal. I don't struggle with weigh gain problems. If anything, I am very underweight. But I made this because I see so many people being shamed for their bodies. You have to be a certain way to be accepted by society. A tall, skinny woman with large chests, or a man with beautiful abs and healthy body. That is not reality. Everyone is different, there is no split line between what is and isn't beauty. You are beautiful just the way you are.
I used color, form, texture and space in this piece. I tried to make the shading consistent throughout the whole piece but for some reason, it was kind of difficult. I am kind of happy with the lighting but not so much the shading. I made them without faces because I wanted to show emotion without showing facial expressions. Facial expressions are a give-away when it comes to showing how someone feels. You can use the environment, the lighting/shading, and the poses to show how someone feels. I'm iffy about this piece but it did come out decent when you compare it to the time I had to work on it.
