LK Stilkey

My work shows how I have improved because through the beginning of the year, I was drawing using only colored pencils. About half way through the year, I was drawing using other materials. About toward the end of the year, I started using other things such as sculpy, charcoal and pastels. This shows I am willing to use multiple different types of media and styles. I love drawing cartoony artwork and also creating things that look realistic.

The most challenging thing to do all year was to finish things on time. At the beginning of the year, I was doing fine. I could get done before deadlines easily. But throughout the year, deadlines got closer than I expected them to be, and sometimes I had to present an unfinished project. Time is an artists worst enemy, as time can stop an artist from doing what they want to do and only doing what needs to be done.

I am very proud of the work that I have shaded and put detail into, such as the more larger projects. It makes me feel good inside to know that I had spent time to make such a piece. I'm proud of myself for getting higher grades than last year, as I did end up finishing things and getting grades for each project.

My work illustrates my strengths and weaknesses as a learner in many different ways. One being the fact that there were many pieces that are not as strong and as nice looking as the others. Some work pops out and has feelings and a story to it, while others are just casual artwork. It shows how I have learned to try harder on my work, as the beginning of the year, my work popped out a little less. But throughout the year, I could show how hard I have tried to make artwork that is meaningful to me.

My name is LK and I am currently a junior in Freeport High School. I was born in a hospital in Portland, Maine and grew up in Freeport. In my spare time I like to draw, animate, needle felt and create costumes. I usually am always busy working on commissions for other people. If I’m not working on artwork, I am working on my counseling sessions with other people. And if I’m not working on that, I am playing with my cats. I have my own website for my artwork and commission work, and I also have my own website for counseling sessions. I plan on going to college to pursue in social work and counseling. If I can, I would like to be an art therapist. Art will always be my side job/hobby.

The artwork I usually focus on is cartoons and design. I like getting a lot of detail with fine point pens and colored pencils. I always tend to draw animals in my artwork. My favorite type of art to make is animals and anthros. It is always difficult for me to try to find a new medium, as I’m always so used to drawing with fine point pens and colored pencils. Art is important to me because it was what made me have my friends today. Without my artwork, I would have never of met them. I started drawing when I was 2, I would scribble on paper and show my dad every single time I made something. My parents were always buying me stacks of paper that I instantly used up. I grew up thinking I wanted to be a singer, but when I realized I was terrified of performing and being in front of crowds, I continued making artwork and dropped music all together. I now realize that I want to be a therapist, but art will never be dropped and I will continue to make my work ‘till the day I die.
