Safe at Home

Gouache on watercolor paper

For this assignment, we were asked to create a piece of art that promoted a message during this time of a pandemic. I've considered my greatest contribution to slowing the spread has been self-isolating in my home for about three weeks now. Many people have referred to this as being "stuck at home" when in reality, this is the best thing you can do right now, to keep yourself and others safe. So, I changed that statement into "safe at home" and made a pleasing window sill scene to go along with it.

To make this work, I started by sketching this scene with graphite, then used gouache paint to color it. I wanted the colors to be bright, bold, but also minimal in the number of colors that I used. I wanted few details and I wanted the main point to be the text, so I used a complimentary color of blue so that the text would stand out against the window.

Overall, I am very happy with this piece. I think it's good in the technical aspect, but also promotes a good message during this time.
