Concentration #1

Regrowth

For this assignment, we began our first project that was based around our concentration for the rest of the semester. My concentration is plants/regrowth, so I wanted to show that through a mix media form. I decided to replicate two walls that were broken, one would be taken over by plants and overgrowth, and one would be vandalized by graffiti. To begin, I made two walls made out of clay and carved a brick-like design into each, using different types of tools and techniques to create a realistic, spongy brick texture. From there, I allowed them to dry before firing and glazing. While I waited for them to dry, I made the plants out of sculpey.

Once my walls were complete, I distressed them with a hammer and screwdriver, and made the graffiti out of watercolor paint. I also glued my flower and mushrooms to the other wall.

Overall, I am very happy with my first concentration project. I think that I pushed my boundaries by using mixed media and expanding my original idea to convey a deeper message. If I could go back and change anything, I think that it would be cool if I made a sculpey spray paint can and had string the color of the graffiti coming out of the can and attaching to the wall to make it looking like the spray can was painting right there, and through that I could create an action piece and another layer of mixed media.
