For this assignment, we were asked to create a third sculpture that represented our concentration. With mine being growth/nature, I decided to make my subject fish/water, continuing the theme from my second concentration sculpture. I also wanted to push the material to something I haven't done before, so I decided to use glass fusing. I started with a 3 by 3 square of transparent green glass. I arranged pieces varying in size and shades of orange to look like two koi fish, just like the ones I made out of sculpey previously. Then I used Elmer's glue to secure the pieces down on the glass base, putting them in a certain way to suggest movement and balance. Using small bits of turquoise glass, I made a symbol in the middle of the fish to represent growth and to have a focal point of my piece. I then finished by gluing the larger pieces of white and blue glass around the edges of my piece, filling in the gaps with smaller pieces. From here, my piece was fused together through the heat of the kiln.
Overall, I am very happy with my Concentration #3. I think continuing the same subject but changing the material to my last sculpture strengthened by overall concentration. If I could change anything, I might have made the fish out of smaller bits of orange glass to make the shape of the fish more intricate and rounded. Also, I wish I used darker blue to contrast with the orange more.
