Google MyMaps

For This activity you will create TWO maps using Google MyMaps.

First you will WATCH the TWO video Tutorial BELOW you know how to create a MYMaps. It is not difficult, but you need to know where the buttons are to edit and enhance your Map with images, URLs etc...

Watch Both Videos because each one teaches slightly different skills.

The first map you create to learn the skills is:

#1 - Walking tour of Pleasanton

* Include at least 5 places in your "Walking Tour of Pleasanton"

* Include 5 pictures of your places in Pleasanton

DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR HOUSE OR ANYONE'S HOUSE IN THE MAP

* Include a "Street View" link of your places (requires Google Maps)

* Use a URL shortener https://goo.gl/

* Include Custom Icons for your locations

* Show the "walking path" I would take (make it a thick line)

* Calculate the distance of the walk

* Include the distance in the "notes" under the Map Title

#2 - Your Choice Map

2. The Second Map you create will be your choice.

YOU MUST LET ME KNOW YOUR IDEA BEFORE YOU START -

your locations need to have some kind of theme.

Map Requirements

The requirements for "your choice" map will be the same at the walking tour map with the addition of a video. In the event that you are traveling the world, you can use the ruler to calculate the total distance travelled and include that in the "notes" under the Map Name.

* Include at least 5 places in your Map.

* Include 5 pictures of your places.

DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR HOUSE OR ANYONE'S HOUSE IN THE MAP

* include a Video of your location

VIDEO MUST BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE AND < 3 mins

* Include a "Street View" link of your places (requires Google Maps)

* Use a URL shortener https://goo.gl/

* Include Custom Icons for your locations

* Show the "walking path" I would take (make it a thick line)... if you are traveling the world, it will be a "distance travelled line."

* Calculate the total distance of traveled

* Include the distance in the "notes" under the Map Title

Here are some ideas - but feel free to propose a creative idea:

- Famous Sport Stadium Tour

- National Parks

- National Landmarks

- Places in the world you want to visit in your life

- Houses of the Rich and Famous

Using Icons

Using Images From A Google Drive Folder

If you need to use images from a Google Drive folder, for a personal map of vacation pictures for example - as opposed to just pictures found on the internets, here is what you need to do.

1. Create a Folder in your Drive for the pictures

2. Set sharing on the FOLDER to "anyone with the link can view".

3. Upload you pictures to the folder

4. Click and open a picture in Drive. Use CONTROL CLICK and choose "copy link" for the picture.

5. On your map, use this as the URL for the image for a "point" on your map. If done correctly, it will appear right away!!!
