Audit Scoring Explained

Audits will normally be scored on a percentage basis.

This gives the manager a useful metric to see how well the site has done in the audit.

It's not essential that you understand how this percentage is calculated but if you do want to know, please read on.

Marking Questions

Auditors can score questions as either 2,1 or 0.

Additionally, a score of -2 is available for instances where the level of non-adherence is so significant that the auditor deems it necessary to double the penalty for that particular question.

Weighting

All audit questions have a weighting. This helps us make more important issues impact the score more than others.

For example:

'Are fire exit routes suitable, unobstructed, doors openable and in good condition?'

Might have a weighting of 12, and

'With regard to health and safety is communication with the team on site suitable?'

Might have a weighting of 2

Question Scoring

The maximum score that a question can get is 2 x the question weighting (as 2 is the highest score a question can be given).

So for example, looking at this question again:

'Are fire exit routes suitable, unobstructed, doors openable and in good condition?'

If it is marked 1

The score for that question is 1 x 12 so 12

If it is marked 2

The score for that question is 2 x 12 so 24

You can see the question score next to each question when you look at your audit in expanded view mode

How Is The Audit Percentage Score Worked Out

The percentage score is worked out by adding up the maximum possible scores for each question. So for each question that is 2 x the question weighting.

Then we look at the total of the question scores.

We then use:

Total of question scores /  Total of maximum scores x 100 to calculate the percentage

You can see this at the bottom of the audit

Worked Example

Here is a simplified audit that has been scored:

Total of the question scores is 16 (2+4+2+8)

Total maximum scores is 18 (4+4+2+8)

Percentage for this audit is therefore 89% (16/18 x100)

Note - additional actions added to the audit do not affect the score.
