Shark Tank

Grade/Class: Grade 5 Math & Literacy

Context: Grade 5 students read the book Ten Marks and a Train Ticket, a book written by Susy Goldstein and Gina Hamilton about their father's experience escaping Germany before the Holocaust.

Learning: Students worked on a cross curricular assignment in which they used their knowledge of financial literacy, media and persuasion in language. They worked as partners to become entrepreneurs and create an innovative product or service. They created a google slideshow to present to their peers (who acted as investors/judges). Students had to make a unique logo and slogan to use for advertising. They had to ask for an investment amount and determine how much of their business they would be willing to part with in exchange for the investment. Students had to clearly describe the features of the product, what age would use the product, any safety recommendations, wholesale vs retail price and any patents. This activity sparked an interest in business and will hopefully inspire them to be future entrepreneurs!Â
