Srulik Cartoons

Grade/Class: Grade 8 Ivrit

Context: Students learn about contemporary Israeli culture to improve their wholistic understanding of Ivrit.

Learning: In Ivrit class, the grade 8 boys learned about a cartoon character Srulik who represents Israel and typical Israeli or the ultimate Sabra. The boys read a short biography of Kabriel Gadosh and learned about the change in the appearance of Srulik with changing times and history. Srulik and “the spirit of Srulik" is Dosh’s most important legacy, behind which stands an unwavering belief in the State of Israel, the historical justice of its inception, the strength, vitality and resourcefulness of its people, its freedom of speech and self criticism, and the aspiration to create a just society which is connected to its Jewish roots. As a part of their culminating activity, the boys created a new version of their Srulik. The boys also wrote short essays describing the features of their new Srulikim and explaining why they mode those changes.
