Chanukah Candles

Grade/Class: Grade 1 Ivrit

Context: Students learn about Chanukah and how we celebrate the holiday.

Learning: Grade 1 students learn about the story of Chanukkah with their teacher and review the customs (lighting candles, spinning dreidels, singing songs, etc.). The students visit the STEAM Lab and learn about the components of the Chanukkah candles (wick פְּתִילָה, and wax שעווה) in Hebrew. They learn about the number of candles needed for every night of Chanukkah, and then have the opportunity to craft a pair of candles to be used on the first night with their families; one candle and one Shamash. Each student measures the required length of each wick, and rolls a sheet of beeswax to create a candle.
