Grade/Class: Grade 5 SS
Context: Student learn about systems of government.
Learning: The students got a chance to investigate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Once this was done, they created a comparative chart between their rights and responsibilities at home, in Canada and at Netivot. They worked in small groups and had many lively conversations debating what a right or freedom is. Students used thier learning to form their own Netivot political parties and platforms. As a culmination of this learning, grade 5 took a field trip to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. We got to head into the Assembly room, learn about the history of the building and even stage a mock debate. Both sides of the debate made some points, and some students were even able to play different roles found within the legislature.
