Communicating our feelings through music by modifying the musical elements - tempo and dynamics

As musicians, we modify the musical elements like tempo, dynamics, pitch and timbre to communicate how we feel or to evoke emotions in our listeners. We also consider these musical elements to tell a story or idea.

Musician's Statement:

Our group sang Mo Li Hua with a depressed emotion because our favourite place, Kidzania, is going to close down forever. This was our favourite place because we can have fun making candy. If you listened carefully to our singing, we changed the tempo to a slower speed and also the dynamics was pianissimo or very soft.

Musician's Statement:

Our group sang Mo Li Hua with a happy emotion because we remembered a trip to Wild Wild Wet (WWW). WWW is a water theme park where there are slides, pools and obstacles that we can go around. There is also a lazy pool where we can relax. If you listened to our singing carefully, we changed the tempo to allegro and the dynamics was forte to show our happiness and excitement.

Musician's Statement:

Our group sang Mo Li Hua angrily because we saw our mother going out to buy things. Then my brother played roughly with me. Then I got upset and angry. You can hear the anger in our voices when we changed the timbre of our voices to sound as if we were growling. We also changed the tempo to moderato and the dynamics to forte to emphasised the anger.

Musician's Statement:

Our group sang Mo Li Hua with a scared emotion because we did not do our homework. We were afraid that we would get scolded by the teacher and our parents. We changed the dynamics to pianissimo and the tempo to a slower tempo, adagio.
