October Greetings!

September's MO Thespian Leadership Conference enjoyed record attendance. The opportuniteis for student leadership through this statewide arts ed organization are so inspiring! This month I was privileged to attend the Missouri Music Education Associaiton New Teacher/Mentor Conference, which was partnered with a meeting of statewdie members of the collegiate level chapter of the National Association for Music Education and the High School level chapters of Tri M. This program unites the teacher pipeline for music educators and also helps ensure teacher rtention. MAAE wants to help any arts educator not currently connected with a content-specific mentor.  Use this survey to help MAAE connect with any arts teachers new to the profession. Closing out September was the annual Speech and Theatre Association of Missouri professional learning conference, and the fall conference of the Missouri Art Education Association in Knob Noster, MO.

October promises to be action-packed as MAAE reinforces connections with Missouri's Secondary School Principals, Missouri Library Association and Gifted Association of Missouri at their conferences. MAAE also will be present at Southeast Missouri State University and Dr. Aaron Wacker hosts a day of professional learning on October 20.

A reminder to check out our professional learning community offerings which are FREE and help teachers get connected with colleagues and resources to help meet student needs. Find details about each upcoming session below.

Consider makiing a nomination for one or more of our MAAE Awards. We have several different award categories, but today, please reflect on the arts offerings available for students in your school or district that make it beneficial to the students, the school, and the larger community. Please consider making a nomination for MAAE's annual recognition of Schools or Districts of Excellence or Distinction. learn more about the award criteria here

Tap to learn more

For over two decades The Positive Zone Corporation has delivered musically engaging, electrifying, and educational character-building  programs such as The More You Learn, The More You Earn, to Guaranteed 4.0, to Stop The Bullying to Genius In Me World Tour to 15 Magnificent Years, and Enough Is Enough of Bullying. In this 2023-2024 school year, we are pleased to announce our latest program, One Family, One Goal. We want to bring this program, to Missouri schools.

WOW! One Family, One Goal SPECIAL!

The global pandemic has impacted every area of our lives, interrupting what we deem as “normal” and bringing to the forefront some of our greatest fears. With the learning environment changing from in- personal to virtual, students were also faced with social isolation and cyber bullying. As we return to our routines, now is the perfect time for a RESET, for families, students, school administrators and staff.

This year’s program, is designed to take us back to the basics, empowering youth and providing tools for navigating our every changing world. One family, One Goal, is 39-minute, high-energy assembly featuring a Veteran Motivational Speaker, an All-Star Band, and interactive surprises imparting to youth the Value of Mutual Respect, the Importance of Being Unique, and the Power of Peace.

The Positive Zone Corporation has secured some funding from a grant for Missouri schools to present One Family, One Goal Global Tour. It is our mission to spread this message to as many youths as possible, and our pleasure to share this program with every school in the district. The dates available are October 2023 for Anti- Bullying Month) & February 2024 for Black History Month.

MAAE Arts Across the Curriculum

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?

We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

MAAE - Looking for new ACE Program School Partners

Promoting teaching strategies which involve the arts in teaching and learning, such as Arts Integration, continues to be priority work for the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education. Funded by a special grant from the Missouri Arts Council, MAAE will implement the Arts Centered Education (ACE) program, with an emphasis on serving Missouri's rural schools.
ACE provides customized, onsite professional learning in arts integration at no cost to the school.

If you think your school may be interested in participating in MAAE's ACE program, please email lauren.hanahan@moaae.org.

We are excited to announce the Senate Student Fine Arts Exhibition, a showcase of the incredible artistic talents of Missouri youth. This year’s exhibit, like in years past, will feature images of many fine arts disciplines.

Selected photographs of student artwork/performances will be framed and displayed with the student artist’s name. There is no fee for submission and all submissions are submitted digitally.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to share your art and to connect with your policy makers in a creative and meaningful way. Please contact Vicki Bean at senate.exhibit@maea.net if you have any questions.

MAAE's Arts Advocacy Efforts
Tap to learn more

MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. This includes our signature advocacy programs: Fine Arts Education Day, Senate Student Arts Exhibit, and the Show-Me Arts Summit. Other activities include reporting to our allies about the activities of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Board of Education, pending legislation, and changes to administrative rules. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.

MAAE supports funding for the Missouri Fine Arts Academy
Tap to learn more

MAAE works with legislators to garner support for the funding of the Missouri Fine Arts Academy. As an advocate for arts education, we believe that it is of the utmost importance to provide young people the opportunity to develop their creative and artistic potential. The Missouri Fine Arts Academy does this by providing intensive and rigorous instruction to talented high school students in Missouri.

The Academy is a unique program that has been providing high-quality arts education to students for over 20 years. Students who are accepted into the program have the chance to work with some of the finest artists and educators in the state, and to participate in a range of activities that help them to develop their creative and artistic abilities. The Academy provides training in dance, theater, music, visual arts, and creative writing, and encourages students to explore their passions and interests in these areas.

The Academy has a strong track record of producing talented artists who go on to pursue careers in the arts or use their skills to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The Academy also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among its students, helping them to connect with peers who share their interests and passions.

Given the many benefits that the Missouri Fine Arts Academy provides, MAAE strongly urge you to consider supporting this important program. Please email your representatives to support investing in arts education. This program is not only important for the personal development of our students, but it also has the potential to strengthen our communities by fostering creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

Americans for the Arts has created a new resource hub on their website to support Threats to Artistic Freedom. Find updates on activity across the United  States related to advocacy in this area.

12th annual Cool Science Artwork Competition
Deadline Jan. 14, 2024 | Tap to learn more

12th annual Cool Science Artwork Competition - Deadline January 14, 2024

Cool Science
Cool Science is a free and public art competition held each fall for all K-12 artists. Cool Science is a collaboration between the UMass Lowell, UMass Boston, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, University of Kansas, and Kansas City Art Institute.  In 2019, Cool Science received a National Science Foundation grant that helped it expand the project beyond Massachusetts to Kansas, Missouri, and Southern New Hampshire. However, students from any location around the world are welcome to participate.

Challenge Questions
This year, we are asking young artists to answer one of the following challenge questions with a visual work of art:

1) Sunlight is the largest source of energy on the surface of the Earth. How does sunlight fuel extreme weather (e.g., extreme storms)?

2) Increases in carbon dioxide in the air lead to more extreme weather. Animal homes do not make carbon dioxide on average (they are Net Zero). What can we learn from animals to help us get our homes closer to Net Zero?

3) What simple thing could you do now to better prepare for extreme weather in the future?

Competition Winners
During this winter, we will select the best entries for display on public buses in Massachusetts and Kansas in 2024.  The honorees will be recognized at our art exhibit celebrations next year.

Telling Your Story to the Beat of Jazz
Featuring Imani Gonzalez

For teachers of grades 3-8

Experience what happens when two cultures, African and American blues, collide to create an exciting new experience built on the musical elements of “repetition” and “call & response.” Explore strategies that are aligned with Writer’s Workshop to engage students in writing their own blues songs that express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Giving voice to children’s thoughts and feelings is an integral part of their social-emotional development. Writing personal narratives with an understanding of the stories told in musical forms that led to the development of jazz will encourage students to connect their emotions to the content of writing and create their own authentic blues story. Because blues music comes from a long tradition of storytelling defiance in the face of adversity, it is natural to connect the process to personal narrative writing. Teachers learn to immerse their students in the rich history of jazz, as they trace its roots and influences through African traditional chants, work songs, spirituals, ragtime, and the blues, all to create their own story.

Screenwriters and scholars gathered at Stephens College
A Review by Laura Kirk
Tap to read now

Joan Didion said we tell ourselves stories in order to live. Screenwriters and scholars gathered at Stephens College Sept. 20-24 for Gender and the Female Gaze. The welcome gathering was tapas, wine, and meeting new colleagues locally and from around the world. Stephens College President Dianne Lynch welcomed attendees and toasted the organizer Rosanne Welch who also runs the Stephens College MFA in Screenwriting. Meg LeFauve & Lorien McKenna kicked off the conference educating the audience about the male gaze and female gaze on screen. The female gaze: What can she do? Both speakers shared their struggles and triumphs and called for more gender equity, all with wit and wisdom. Young women in the audience appeared sparked and encouraged. McKenna closed with an exercise to identify personal wants and identify action steps toward those goals. Throughout the week when thanked, McKenna would confirm the grateful young woman had a plan for Monday to take a step toward her goal identified.

Multiple panels with a variety of speakers and fascinating subjects filled the days. I overheard local attendees admire the scholarship and theory presented and consider how it will influence their practice. The exchange of ideas, analysis, and methods was a true embarrassment of riches. There was excitement, admiration, and new connections. The ongoing fashion exhibit “A Star is Born” demonstrated how fashion supported screenwriters to create iconic female characters – costumes telling their own story.

Keynote speaker Phil LaZebnick shared stories of growing up in Columbia including the invention of the humanities by Louise Dudley of the very hall in which we were learning and teaching. Vital indeed, as higher education faces real threats to these studies. LaZebnick shared insightful tales of his work beginning with Disney secrets for success application to story, musical theatre collaboration, and final reference to stories in caves. Now we have the medium of moving pictures, all of which require screenwriters. Jeff Melvoin ended his keynote speech about the evolution of radio to television showrunning by encouraging writers to keep the fire going in the face of the writers' strike and shifting paradigms - to persevere with their stories and bring light to the future. In his inaugural screenwriting research lecture historian Tom Stempel told researchers “Academia hates original research unless it confirms what they already know”, as he urged researchers to stay the course. Stempel was speechless to be awarded the SRN inaugural lifetime achievement award.

Seasoned empathetic role models, LeFauve and McKenna continued to inspire by recording their iconic podcast The Screenwriting Life live from the Macklanburg Playhouse allowing emerging writers to explore/pitch their own work. Writers learned the importance of personal connection/ identifying the “lava” of their stories. Closing night was a screening of LeFauve’s Inside Out at Ragtag Cinema and an accompanying Q&A.

Screenwriting is a relatively new course of study that deserves merit. Screen stories are now in the palm of our hands accessible and binge-worthy. If the diversity and goals described at the conference continue, the possibilities for inclusive and equitable narratives will be a reality going forward. The SRN is in its seventeenth year. Conferences such as these are a shot in the arms of educators, creators, and students. Missouri is in an exciting position with new tax incentives for film production. https://mofilm.org/ Thanks to Missouri Film Office and Stephens College for hosting this important network of 700+ members from 50+ countries.
