IN THIS ISSUE
November 2022
The leaves are falling and as the weather turns crisp, thoughts turn to fall and the coming winter performances and exhibitions. May all of your upcoming events be a rousing success! Please remember that these are opportunities to engage with your community, helping you build a coalition of support for your arts education program. Sharing artist statements, or other expressions of student learning, are great ways of making connections with your audience and helping others become advocates on your behalf.
It is with a sense of deep compassion that our hearts go out to all who are so profoundly affected by recent tragic events at the Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis. Please reach out to us if we can be of any assistance.
The Alliance networking continued throughout October with the State Board of Education meeting, and exhibits and presentations at the Missouri Art Education Association Fall Conference in Knob Noster, the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals in Columbia, and the Midwest Kodaly Music Educators Association Conference in St. Louis.
The MAEA conference featured dozens of learning opportunities for teachers to exchange ideas and to learn from peers. Presentations were offered by gifted presenters providing opportunities for exploring new mediums and pedagogical techniques. MAAE is proud to continue to support this effective content-specific professional learning.
At the October State Board of Education Meeting, Board member Don Claycomb shared a low cost and high reward means of recognizing influential teachers in the community. In this model, a student selects an influential teacher, and honors that person using the student's own words at a school event. There is potential to use this approach for arts education advocacy in your community. If you decide to give it a try, please let us know!
In November we look forward to a featured presentation "3e - Gifted, Artistic and Autistic" as part of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Gifted and Talented Tuesdays - a free professional learning series for educators working with students identified as "Gifted." I'll also be visiting several schools and exhibiting at the Missouri School Boards Association and Missouri Association of School Administrators conference in Kansas City, and the Missouri Society of Health and Physical Education conference in Osage Beach, and our collaboration with Missouri Dance Organization and Mid-America Dance Company. I am continually amazed at the extraordinary efforts of so many working to strengthen arts education in Missouri!
More GOOD NEWS! The Alliance's application to join as an Affiliate member of the Arts Education Partnership (AEP) was approved. The AEP is a diverse group of organizations and individuals that conduct arts education-related work at the local, state, regional, or direct-service level. Administered by the Education Commission of the States, this organization is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education.
As always, we invite you to become engaged with the work of the Alliance in the way that fits you best. There is no cost for you to Become an Ally as an individual or as an organization. Join one of our three FREE professional learning communities or help us recognize and celebrate contributions to arts ed in Missouri through our MAAE awards program. You can also follow our social media platforms @moartsed.
Thanks for all you are doing to support Missouri's students of the arts! If we can help in way, please feel free to reach out!
