Tap to see guidelines and to nominate
Deadline for nominations January 31, 2024
Nominating supporters and advocates for the arts to be honored at our state capital each year has lasting impact on our communities. MAAE believes that nominating change-makers matters for the following reasons:
Recognition: An award can give advocates visibility and recognition for their contributions to the arts education field, as well as their dedication to promoting creative expression and cultural awareness.
Encouragement: Recognition by colleagues and the community can provide advocates with positive reinforcement for their work, which can encourage them to continue pushing for quality arts education programs.
Inspiration: Honoring advocates with an award can inspire others to get involved in arts education advocacy and take action in their own communities.
Networking: An award ceremony can be an excellent opportunity for advocates to meet and connect with other like-minded individuals, which could lead to collaborations and partnerships in the future.
Please honor those change-makers in your life today!

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?
We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

As you may already know, the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE) is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly to promote and support high-quality arts education in Missouri schools. Through various initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and partnerships with organizations, schools and communities, MAAE has been able to provide countless opportunities for students to learn and excel in the arts.
However, we cannot do this alone. As a non-profit organization, MAAE relies heavily on the support of donors like you to continue its critical work. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a significant difference in enhancing the quality and accessibility of arts education statewide.
I urge you to consider making a donation to MAAE today and help us create a brighter future for our young learners. Thank you in advance for your support and for being an advocate of the arts and education.

MAAE's Arts Advocacy Efforts
Tap to learn more
MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. This includes our signature advocacy programs: Fine Arts Education Day, Senate Student Arts Exhibit, and the Show-Me Arts Summit. Other activities include reporting to our allies about the activities of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Board of Education, pending legislation, and changes to administrative rules. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.
MAAE supports funding for the Missouri Fine Arts Academy
Tap to learn more
MAAE works with legislators to garner support for the funding of the Missouri Fine Arts Academy. As an advocate for arts education, we believe that it is of the utmost importance to provide young people the opportunity to develop their creative and artistic potential. The Missouri Fine Arts Academy does this by providing intensive and rigorous instruction to talented high school students in Missouri.
The Academy is a unique program that has been providing high-quality arts education to students for over 20 years. Students who are accepted into the program have the chance to work with some of the finest artists and educators in the state, and to participate in a range of activities that help them to develop their creative and artistic abilities. The Academy provides training in dance, theater, music, visual arts, and creative writing, and encourages students to explore their passions and interests in these areas.
The Academy has a strong track record of producing talented artists who go on to pursue careers in the arts or use their skills to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The Academy also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among its students, helping them to connect with peers who share their interests and passions.
Given the many benefits that the Missouri Fine Arts Academy provides, MAAE strongly urge you to consider supporting this important program. Please email your representatives to support investing in arts education. This program is not only important for the personal development of our students, but it also has the potential to strengthen our communities by fostering creativity, innovation, and collaboration.
Americans for the Arts has created a new resource hub on their website to support Threats to Artistic Freedom. Find updates on activity across the United States related to advocacy in this area.

Welcome Dr. Kendra Franks
New Arts Education Director at Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Tap to read Dr. Franks Introduction Letter
Hello! My name is Kendra Franks, and I am the new Director of Fine Arts with DESE. I am stepping into Roger Kelley’s role and have just gotten started. I love the arts and believe that they are essential, not just beneficial, for students and communities.
My skills and training are in piano, voice, and education with years of experience in teaching music at public and private schools; small colleges and large universities; as well as collaborative piano and private studio. I have been a high school choir director for a large urban school and a K – 12 all music, band, and choir teacher for a rural school. I have taught undergraduate and graduate music education students in methods courses and general elementary teachers in music integration in general classes. My experiences give me understanding for the diverse situations our Missouri arts teachers find themselves in.
My background and degrees are in music education. I love exploring the craft of teaching and mentoring others in improvement. My dissertation examined the role of curiosity in learning and creativity in music education. I am hoping to encourage teachers around the state to consider how to cultivate curiosity which is the fuel for creativity.
My heart has always been student learning and helping those who may not be successful in a traditional style classroom. The arts can be the tool for improved student learning and engagement and can inspire creative problem-solvers for the future. I look forward to meeting you and discovering your heart’s desire for the arts in Missouri. I appreciate your support and engagement as we move forward to help the “fine arts flourish” and spotlight where students and schools are already “shining” in the arts throughout Missouri.
